No matter how much research and brainstorming you have gone through while writing an article, few grammatical mistakes can make you look naive and the article cringe-worthy. Also, grammar has been asked consistently in almost all the MBA entrance exams (only CAT has been avoiding it for a few years now). Incorrect: I’ll send you the mails when I sit at my laptop.
Correct: I’ll send you the mails when I sit on my laptop.
Explanation: ‘At’ gives the description of your physical position. ‘On’ gives a meaning of working on your computer.
Incorrect: Anyways, I was telling you about the movie I watched yesterday.
Correct: Anyway, I was telling you about the movie I watched yesterday.
Explanation: Anyway means regardless. Anyways is a slang and is a non-standard use of language.
Incorrect: My daughter-in-laws have gone to the market.
Correct: My daughters-in-law have gone to the market.
Explanation: Plural form is daughters-in-law, not daughter-in-laws.
Incorrect: She couldn’t decide what to wear, so she ended not going to the party.
Correct: She couldn’t decide what to wear, so she ended up not going to the party.
Explanation: End means finish. End up means to reach or come to a place/condition/situation.
Incorrect: Be careful not to loose your tie this time.
Correct: Be careful not to lose your tie this time.
Explanation: lose is a verb. Loose is an adjective.
Incorrect: If I’m you, I would have bought the stocks.
Correct: If I were you, I would have bought the stocks.
Explanation: ‘I were’ is used when you talk about something that isn’t true.
Incorrect: It is Anshul’s and Shashank’s case.
Correct: It is Anshul and Shashank’s case.
Explanation: For a collective possession of things only one apostrophe ‘s’ is used.
Incorrect: Ram’s father is a MLA.
Correct: Ram’s father is an MLA.
Explanation: For words which sounds like a vowel (A, E, I, O, U) ‘an’ is used. E.g.: ‘A university’ not ‘an university’.
Incorrect: They learned how to play a Piano by themself.
Correct: They learned how to play a Piano by themselves.
Explanation: Themself is not a word, themselves is.
Incorrect: Rakhi is annoying today, usually she’s fun to be around.
Correct: Rakhi is being annoying today, usually she’s fun to be around.
Explanation: Rakhi is not always annoying so being is used to indicate a continuing action.
